RUAR Opens Little Free Antiracist Library at Saint Matthew in Walnut Creek

On Sunday, May 1st, Rise Up Against Racism opened its newest Little Free Antiracist Library, located at Walnut Creek’s Saint Matthew Lutheran Church. The Library is sponsored by Carole Wynstra (mother of co-founder Meg Honey) and is stewarded by Jessica and Mike Kelley, who have been tremendous supporters of RUAR since its inception.

Pastor Rustin Comer opened the ribbon-cutting event by expressing his gratitude for the moment, saying that a Little Free Antiracist Library at Saint Matthew is “a dream come true.” Nestled on Wiget Lane in a busy stretch across the street from Walnut Acres Elementary School, this library will be enjoyed by members young and old.

The commissioned artist of the Little Free Antiracist at Saint Matthew Library is Dev Heyrana. We were so lucky that Dev and her family could be part of the opening celebration. A Bay Area based artist who immigrated to the United States when she was nine years old, Dev shared with community members that books sustained and inspired her as a child. Her vibrant Library includes beautiful images of children reading and serves as an inviting and dynamic piece of functional art.

A new book has been added to our curated collection of antiracist selections: The Three Mothers: How The Mothers Of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped A Nation. Written by California based scholar Anna Malaika Tubbs, the book celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America's most pivotal heroes. Tubbs is also the wife of Michael Tubbs who was Stockton’s youngest and first ever Black Mayor. We are excited to include this new title in the Saint Matthew Little Free Antiracist Library.
