Announcing Our New Non-Profit Status

Today, on National Non-Profit Day, we are pleased to share the news that we are now an official nonprofit organization. With this new charitable organization status, we are building the foundation for our future work.

When we started Rise Up Against Racism, our vision was to implement change through specific, strategic initiatives aimed at fighting racial injustice. Centering on families and education, we sought to create sustainable, multi-generational opportunities for community members to donate, speak out and take action against racism.

As we celebrate our new non-profit status and look towards the future, we also reflect on where we’ve been and what we’ve accomplished. We started our efforts with a community event at Valle Verde Elementary School, where we came together to hold a moment of silence to honor George Floyd and the countless others who have been the victims of racial injustice. And, when we rose from our peaceful kneel, we vowed as a community to take a stand against racism. This event also kicked off our first project, the Antiracist Book Initiative. To date, we have raised more than $6,000, constructed four Little Free Antiracist Libraries, and have commissioned local Black artists who are currently turning the Libraries into functional pieces of community art.We will be sharing more details about the wonderful artists, our amazing volunteers, and the Black owned bookstores where we acquired the books. Stay tuned!

As we plan future endeavors and expand our scope of antiracist work, our status as an official non-profit organization will provide opportunities for both individuals and businesses to pledge their support of our mission, while we spearhead new initiatives, and grow our reach throughout Walnut Creek and beyond. We are grateful for the support we have received as well as the invaluable contributions of our donors and community supporters. We are ready to expand our work and are optimistic for the impact we can make today and in the future.
